down the road with the loneliness.

roads, black and white, city, midnight, driving, dark, nostalgiaI have always feared you leaving for whatever reason, and when it strikes unexpectedly, the only thing I can think of to do is to keep quiet.

“I already knew it wouldn’t last.” Your words sound so different from the first time we have met. “I’m sorry, really.” If you want me to lose respect, then you have gained it proudly.

I remember my excitement seconds before I let you glorify my innocence. Sometimes, I hate my young mind, but gratitude to these little bluffs of life, I learn.

“Take your keys and drive me around the city.” I do not wait for you; I just storm outside and wait by your car. As we break the speed limit of the roads, I roll my windows down and let the rush of my anger out beneath the lonely eyes of yellow lamps and midnight blue skies.

You grasp my free hand and clear your throat. “We can still be friends, right?”

Right.
